Creating a comfortable and inviting bathroom for guests is a hallmark of a thoughtful host(ess).
Whether your guests are staying one night or a whole week (or longer), a well-stocked, organized bathroom can make the experience so much better for them, showing that you care about their needs and comfort.
With a few essential accessories, you’ll be the favorite host in the family.
Here are the five must-have bathroom accessories every host should have available and easily accessible for her guests.
1. Quality Pump Bottles for Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to create an upscale, cohesive bathroom look is to use refillable pump bottles for essentials like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
Unlike a mix of random branded bottles that can make a bathroom feel cluttered, quality pump bottles add a sense of polish.
Not only that, but, as a host, you can purchase larger containers of shampoo and conditioner refills and supply your guests with quality shower care at a lower cost per ounce.
That’s a win for you and your guests.
Using matching pump bottles with clear, simple labels helps guests quickly identify what they need.
This thoughtful setup also gives a spa-like, organized feel, reduces confusion and makes their shower experience as enjoyable as possible.
Choose bottles that are easy to refill, durable, and equipped with a pump that dispenses just the right amount—perfect for a quick, hassle-free wash.
If you want to make shower time an ultimate experience for your guests, add some aromatherapy shower steamers or bath bombs for the ultimate guest retreat.
2. Fresh Towels and Hand Towels
Nothing says “welcome” like plush, clean towels.
Fresh towels are a bathroom staple and contribute to a feeling of comfort and luxury.
Easily accessible fresh fluffy towels are the best beginning to an away-from-home stay for your guests.
Stock both large bath towels and smaller hand towels, so guests have everything they need within reach.
Displaying towels in plain sight also ensures they’re easy to find.
Consider folding or rolling the towels neatly and placing them in a basket, on a shelf, or on towel racks where guests can see them right away.
To make their stay even more convenient, provide extra towels for longer visits or in case they want to use a separate towel for hair or face.
3. Extra Toothbrushes
Extra toothbrushes are often overlooked by hostesses.
But it’s not uncommon for guests to forget theirs, and having a spare can be a lifesaver.
There’s no need to make guests ask for one.
Just keep extra toothbrushes accessible so they know they’re welcome to use one if needed.
Presenting the toothbrushes in an inviting way adds a thoughtful touch, like placing them in a basket along with some extra towels and hand lotion.
Arrange them in a welcome basket, display them on the countertop, or place them alongside other toiletries.
You can choose individually wrapped disposable toothbrushes so guests feel comfortable taking one as needed. You might be surprised how far a free, clean new toothbrush will go to making your guests feel right at home.
4. Wastebasket with Liners
I don’t know what this new idea is of putting out a fancy wastebasket and not placing a liner in it, but I can say I really don’t like it.
Are we supposed to put trash in that can?
What if it sticks to the can?
What do I do with wrappers, feminine products and the like?
If there’s no liner in your trash can, your guest either assumes they can’t put trash in it or they will put something disgusting in there and make you wish you had a liner.
A wastebasket with a liner is a must in any guest bathroom.
Providing a wastebasket allows guests to dispose of personal items privately and keeps the bathroom clean and organized.
I have had the unfortunate displeasure of having to walk from someone’s guest bathroom to their kitchen to dispose of my feminine product packaging because there was no liner in the basket of the guest bathroom and that didn’t seem like the right place to dispose of it.
A liner keeps your basket clean and makes your guests more comfortable staying in your home.
Keep extra liners near the wastebasket, either in a cabinet or under even keep a few folded up at the bottom of the trash can under the current liner to it’s easy to see when the old liner is removed.
This also makes it convenient for guests to change the liner if necessary.
This small but considerate touch shows that you’ve thought of everything, and it allows guests to maintain privacy and cleanliness without needing to ask for assistance.
5. Feminine Care Products
Speaking of feminine products, having some extras on hand for guests is a thoughtful addition that female guests, in particular, will appreciate.
Unexpected events can happen, and providing pads and tampons can be a lifesaver.
It’s just one of those things that guests won’t feel comfortable asking for but will be most grateful if you’ve provided them and the unexpected happens.
Display these items discreetly but visibly—perhaps in a small basket or drawer labeled for easy access.
The great thing is you can easily and inexpensively provide plenty of options for your guests.
There are options where you can provide individual period kits for any woman on the go or in an emergency or you can purchase larger packs of assorted sizes of tampons or assorted sizes of pads and just let your guest choose her best option for the circumstance.
This lets guests know these items are available if needed and that they’re free to use them without needing to ask.
Optional Extras
Once the essentials are covered, consider adding a few optional extras to enhance the guest experience.
Your guests will love you if you also provide the following:
- Bottles of water near the bed with a note that let’s them know the water is available as a convenience and to make them feel more at home
- Visible cotton swabs and cotton rounds can help keep your guests on their normal routines
- Band-aids and nail files should be added to the medicine cabinet in the guest bathroom for use as needed. (I can’t count how many times I broke a nail or picked at one when visiting someone or on vacation and had no nail file handy.)
- Individually wrapped makeup remover wipes, while not a necessity, will definitely add to the homey and care-taken ambience for your guests. I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten my makeup remover wipes when traveling out of town. It would have been a huge relief to have a couple available in the guest bathroom.
- Whatever you do, don’t forget the extra toilet paper in the guest bathroom! Guests may feel awkward asking for more, and even worse, if they run out when they need it, you could be running to supply them with extras in the middle of a compromising position for them.
These little additions aren’t required but can elevate a guest’s experience, making them feel truly at home in your space.
Stocking your guest bathroom with these essentials is a simple way to show your hospitality and make a memorable impression.
It’s much easier to be thoughtful of your guests before they arrive so they don’t have to ask for embarrassing things or personal care items on an as-needed basis.
By providing these thoughtful accessories, you create a welcoming, organized bathroom that ensures your guests feel comfortable and cared for while they stay with you.
